Red Beet Root’s health supportive effects

Dear Friends

The Mediterranean-style diet has been attributed with providing elements that reduce the risk of developing one of the all too prevalent chronic degenerative diseases today — i.e. cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and neurodegenerative disorders. (Ames et al. 1993; Lampe, 1999).

The colorful fruits and vegetables in such a diet are attributed with providing the bulk of the preventative elements. Besides the antioxidant vitamins (such as Vit. C and E), the pigments responsible for the vivid colors have been shown to be the most powerful of antioxidants, providing protection from pro-oxidant damage to DNA, enzymes, cells, and tissues of the body.

Betalains are a more recently discovered pigment antioxidant. They are unique to red beetroot and cactus-pear fruit. As anthocyanidins are to blueberries and blackberries, betalains are to beets and cactus fruit — critically important flavonoid antioxidants for our health. Over the next couple of newsletters, we will explore the efficacy of Betalains and their ability to induce Phase II enzyme transcription in human liver cells and their overall antioxidant potential. That is to say, betalains in beets support the ability of the liver to detox and help protect the body against free radicals. Stay tuned.

Clinical Notes:

Our Beta Glucan Synbiotic Formula not only contains organic red beetroot betalains as an important antioxidant, but it also contains the soluble and insoluble fibers of beetroot, oat bran (with a concentration of the very important soluble beta-glucan fibers), and inulin from chicory root — all health-giving items right out of the Mediterranean diet. These are also organic prebiotic fibers, excellent fibers for the good bacteria of the gut. To this mix, we have added 5 pedigreed lactic acid probiotics (good bugs). This makes for a very effective synbiotic (good bugs and fiber) formula; a fiber-rich food; a detox agent; and a cholesterol lowering product (beta-glucan, approved by the American Heart Association).
